Jameson sales reach eight million cases

The world’s biggest-selling Irish whiskey brand, Jameson, broke through the eight-million-case sales mark for the first time in 2019.

The Irish Distillers-owned brand shifted 4.6m nine-litre cases in the first six months of 2019 – with value growth up 9% compared to the same period the previous year.

December 2019 saw the brand’s biggest sales month in history, with 940,000 sold.

Conor McQuaid, chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers, said: “In 1996, we sold one million cases of Jameson for the first time; in 2010, we cracked three million and today we are celebrating the eight-million-case mark.

“In December 2019, Jameson recorded the single largest sales month ever, selling 940,000 cases. In the US, we sold two million cases of Jameson during a six-month period – another first.

“Jameson has been driving the growth of the Irish whiskey category for the past 30 years and as the results show, it continues to thrive and we are incredibly proud of this growth.”

In the six months to 31 December 2019, Jameson’s sales grew faster by value than volume. By value, Jameson increased sales by 34% in Germany, 14% in Russia, 13% in Canada, 12% in South Africa and 10% in the UK.

“Key emerging markets” experienced 37% growth, boosted by Nigeria, which soared 185%, China, which rose 76%, and India, which was up 47%.

Global travel retail also “continues to thrive”, with sales up 7% during the six-month period. This was attributed to the “successful” launch of Jameson Triple Triple in July last year.

McQuaid added: “Growth isn’t just confined to Jameson; there has been strong growth across our portfolio of whiskeys in the first half of the year, including the single pot still category, led by Redbreast (+24%), with growth in the US (+27%), and the UK and France also performing well.

“The Spot range recorded growth of 6.2%. The category has quickly established itself as a drink of choice for refined drinkers and is now among the upper echelons of world whiskeys.

“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do and the team at Midleton continues to push the boundaries.”

The group’s Method and Madness range witnessed “very strong year-to-date growth” of 81%, with UK sales up 57% and Ireland up 55%.
