Mortlach launches ‘spiciest’ whisky to date

Diageo-owned Scotch whisky Mortlach has extended its recently revamped range with the launch of a 14-year-old single malt, which will be exclusively available in travel retail.

The 14-year-old Alexander’s Way is the “spiciest” Mortlach whisky released to date

The UK group overhauled its Mortlach portfolio earlier this year, launching three new bottlings: 12-year-old Wee Witchie, 16-year-old Distiller’s Dram and 20-year-old Cowie’s Blue Seal.

While the entire Mortlach range will launch in travel retail this month, the new 14-year-old whisky, called Alexander’s Way, will be exclusive to the channel.

The name of the new whisky – the “spiciest” Mortlach to date – refers to brand founder Alexander Cowie’s unique 2.81 distillation process, which is how Mortlach distillery continues to operate.

“The whole collection has been created to appeal to explorers – explorers in flavour and explorers in experiences,” said Anna MacDonald, marketing and innovation director at Diageo Global Travel Retail.

“This is why we are particularly excited to have a travel retail-exclusive as part of the collection. Alexander’s Way is the spiciest Mortlach expression to date, created to provide travellers with a something they can’t buy anywhere else.”

Craig Wilson, Mortlach master blender, added: “These whiskies really stand out in Speyside. For me, it’s the way the unique 2.81 process gives you such an intensely complex liquid and character from the minute it comes off the still; it’s like having three distilleries at the one still house.

“Our job is to hone the character in the right way to create four well balanced whiskies of unparalleled richness and complexity.”

The Mortlach range, including Alexander’s Way (£50/US$65), will first launch in travel retail in Taiwan this month before rolling out to other markets.
