Overview: After a brief hiatus, Hop Habit Brewery is back in full swing with a revamped brand identity, new packaging, and an expanded product line. Founded by former employees of Belching Beaver Brewery, Hop Habit has been brewing up a storm at the Vista production facility since 2024.
The Full Story
Hop Habit’s journey began when several longtime employees of Oceanside-based Belching Beaver Brewery decided to strike out on their own. Dubbed “Hop Habit,” this new venture brought together Thomas Peters, Head of Production and Quality Manager at Belching Beaver; Eric Childress, Brewer extraordinaire; Mark Truex, Director of Sales; and Diane Magrath, Human Resources Manager.
Initially brewing a range of hop-forward beers at the shared facility with Belching Beaver, Hop Habit’s offerings were met with enthusiasm from early adopters. However, after nearly a year of relative inactivity on social media and dwindling tap presence around San Diego County, it seemed as though Hop Habit might be calling it quits.
But fear not, craft beer fans! It turns out that the team was simply regrouping and recharging for their next move. With renewed energy and a fresh perspective, Hop Habit has revamped its branding, updated packaging (including six-packs of canned beers), and expanded its product line to include three core beers: West Coast IPA, Tropical Hazy IPA, and Hoppy Pale Ale.
Production & Profile
Hop Habit’s production process is a testament to the team’s dedication to quality. With Thomas Peters at the helm as Head of Production and Quality Manager, every detail – from grain selection to fermentation temperature control – is meticulously managed to ensure that each beer meets the highest standards.
The brewery currently offers three core beers in cans: West Coast IPA (6.2% ABV), Tropical Hazy IPA (7.5% ABV), and Hoppy Pale Ale (4.8% ABV). These brews are designed to showcase the versatility of hops, with each one highlighting a unique aspect of this beloved ingredient.
Brand & Industry History
Hop Habit’s story is deeply intertwined with that of Belching Beaver Brewery, which has been a mainstay in San Diego County since 2013. The shared facility and tasting room at Pub980 allowed Hop Habit to tap into an existing network of beer enthusiasts while developing its own identity.
The decision to take over the Pub980 space and transform it into Hop Habit’s headquarters was driven by the success of their canned beers in grocery stores throughout Southern California. This strategic move enables the brewery to showcase its products, offer seasonal cocktails, and provide a welcoming environment for families – all while maintaining its commitment to quality.
What This Means
The revitalized Hop Habit Brewery is poised to shake up the craft beer landscape with innovative flavors, updated branding, and an expanded product line. By embracing change and adapting to shifting market trends, this brewery has demonstrated a willingness to evolve while staying true to its core values.
As consumers increasingly seek out unique experiences and high-quality products, Hop Habit’s commitment to excellence will undoubtedly resonate with beer enthusiasts across the region.
