Overview: Kingsbarns Distillery has introduced an outdoor putting green, marking the first of its kind at a Scottish distillery. Located near St Andrews, the site integrates golf with whisky tourism to create a distinct visitor experience.
The Full Story
The facility is situated just outside St Andrews, a seaside town recognized as the home of golf. Founded in 2009 by local golf caddie Douglas Clement, the gin and Scotch whisky distillery aims to showcase its tangible connection to the sport. William Wemyss, founder and chairman of Wemyss Family Spirits, noted that golf and whisky have always felt naturally connected in this region.
The initiative allows visitors to combine time on the green with a trip to the whisky distillery or its café. The new addition aims to be a relaxed and accessible experience designed to appeal to golfers, whisky enthusiasts and tourists in search of something authentically and uniquely Scottish. Wemyss stated that enjoying a dram at a working distillery and then stepping onto a green overlooking the St Andrews coastline felt like a natural and fitting way to bring those two worlds together.
Production & Profile
Kingsbarns produces Lowland single malts characterized by a light and fruity floral character using locally grown barley. The operation also manufactures gin under the Darnley’s brand. This production profile aligns with the region’s identity, where both golf and whisky are woven into the area’s culture.
Brand & Industry History
Established in 2009 by Douglas Clement, a local golf caddie, the distillery has built its reputation on this specific location. The opening of the putting green follows last September’s launch of Kingsbarns’ Caddies’ Dream whisky, which was inspired by St Andrews’ golfing legacy.
What This Means
As whisky tourism becomes more competitive internationally, experiences that feel authentic and distinctive become increasingly important. William Wemyss stated that this offering provides something genuinely different in a market where authenticity is key. The distillery believes there was an opportunity to create something visitors would genuinely remember and which could only really exist in this part of Scotland.
Consumer Takeaway
To celebrate the opening, Kingsbarns will run a competition for consumers during August. Distillery manager Peter Holroyd will set a score on the course, inviting visitors to try and beat it. Those who succeed are entered into a prize draw to win the distillery’s three-strong core range of Kingsbarns whiskies: Doocot, Balcomie and Coaltown.
