Overview: The Macallan introduces its new Carta Nautica Collection, a series of single malt Scotch whiskies inspired by the physical journey of oak casks across the Atlantic Ocean. Leading the lineup is a rare expression distilled in 1987 and matured for 38 years at 45.2% ABV.
The Full Story
The collection pays tribute to the transatlantic journey undertaken by bourbon and sherry-seasoned oak casks. Each destination shapes the whisky, reflecting the brand’s heritage and spirit of exploration. Spanish for “nautical chart,” Carta Nautica traces this specific voyage where wood carries a history influenced by origin, preparation, and previous spirits.
The packaging features artwork by American artist Amy Genser, who translated the movement and rhythm of the Atlantic Ocean into a wooden case with undulating waves. The collectible whisky is presented in this distinctive packaging to reflect the casks’ physical journey across the ocean.
Production & Profile
This rare single malt begins maturation in sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera before transferring to previously held North American bourbon casks. The result is a complex profile opening with creamy vanilla, caramelised peaches, tropical pineapple, and hints of rose and pink grapefruit.
A sip reveals antique oak, orange oil, berry compote, nectarines, leather, wood spice, and sultanas on the finish. This unconventional maturation process has been developed by The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery Team to create a collection that reflects the brand’s heritage.
