The Full Story
When Louisville, Kentucky-based couple Dr. Dawn and Stacey Wade decided to venture into the spirits industry, it was not by chance. The founders leveraged their decades of experience in business strategy, advertising, and philanthropy to develop the contemporary gin brand with a commitment to giving back to a historically Black area of the city. The name West End Gin is a homage to an area of the city in which Stacey has a deep connection and roots. Born and raised in Louisville, he has seen the neighborhood in many iterations, reminiscing on its vibrant Black business community.
While Louisville is most famously associated with bourbon, the Wades were interested in a spirit that would allow them to reach a different type of audience. In deep research of the broader spirits industry and trends, they identified gin as a potential opportunity. At the time they were researching, gin represented about 5% of consumption in the United States. The couple spent five years developing the gin brand, taking a deep dive into flavor profiles and tasting notes to determine what their gin would need to challenge more traditional perceptions of the spirit, as well as what they could distill and produce in the Louisville area.
Production & Profile
In summer 2024, they brought West End Gin to market with two expressions: The West End Original (The OG), a more citrus-forward American gin made with more than 12 botanicals, including orange peels, coriander, and jasmine; and the Rose Ann Edition, a softer, more floral expression with notes of rosebud petals, grapefruit and sweet lime among others. Dr. Dawn describes the Rose Ann edition as the softer side of gin because although it is still gin, they pull back on the juniper in it to give that.
If one were to approach West End Gin for the first time, both offered some advice. For Dr. Dawn, an initial taste involves taking in its aroma before having it by itself over ice with a squeeze of lemon or lime. She suggests, “Before you taste it, I would ask you to smell it…because it will put certain things in your mind of life experiences.” Stacey seconds Dr. Dawn’s suggestions but also offers his own recommendations, sharing, “If you’re new to gin, especially if you’re a citrus person, I think a gimlet is a great first choice. A French 75 is also a great first-time experience with the gin. Secondly, I love it with a Spanish tonic with oranges and lemons and limes added.”
Brand & Industry History
The founders leverage decades of experience in business strategy and advertising to develop the brand. Stacey Wade founded the advertising agency NIMBUS in 2002, where a third of his business intentionally supported philanthropic activities. Dr. Dawn joined NIMBUS in 2016 after holding a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, two master’s degrees (one in information technology and the other in logistics management), and a doctorate in business. Their collective experience in this work also informed how and why they began developing their own spirits company, West End Industries, PBC, under which West End Gin sits. Stacey says, “We were eventually led down this path of developing a product that could support impact investing differently than just donating. We are reframing it as a business for investing.”
What This Means
The couple is preparing to open their first distillery in summer 2027, a $6.7 million investment that will be located on the West End’s historic main street. The plans for this 84,000-square-foot facility extend beyond being a distillery and a tasting room. They also envision it as a place that will allow them to give back even more to the community and be an incubator for up-and-coming brands. It will also become the headquarters for their marketing firm NIMBUS, centralizing all their operations into one place. Dr. Dawn adds, “I think we often tend to look for space for exactly what we need… but I wanted something to allow the brand to evolve.” Their plans for the distillery are the perfect illustration of West End Gin’s mission of “Every Pour Means More.”
Consumer Takeaway
For every bottle sold, West End Gin commits $1 to community investment. Dr. Dawn says, “Before we ever sold a bottle, we made our first donation to the West End School… That was really year zero, and after year one, we gave a second check, this time directly to the girls’ school, which had just opened.” Consumers can access the spirit through retail locations in Tennessee, Illinois, Georgia, and Kentucky, with shipping available to 46 states. A smaller 200-milliliter bottle is offered at a lower price point for those interested in trying it. The brand operates as a public benefit company, benefiting not only their neighborhood, but the neighborhoods that raised them all.
