As we age, so does our palate. The boisterous, fruit-forward cocktails favored in college bars are increasingly being seen as…well, a bit young. Leading bartenders are advocating for a sophisticated shift, recommending exciting alternatives for those seeking a more nuanced drinking experience.
Several staples – the Jack & Coke, the Zarzamora, the Kamikaze, the Rum Punch, and even the Frozen Daiquiri – are receiving a critical review. While refreshing, these can often feel overly sweet or lacking depth. Many are seeking a more complex, layered flavor profile.
“Cosmopolitans always felt a little like a starter cocktail,” says Lauren Rojas, Head Bartender at Jac’s on Bond. “It’s fun, pink, and so early 2000s NYC, but it doesn’t go any deeper than that.” Instead, Rojas recommends exploring classics like the Aviation, a gin-based cocktail with crème de violette and maraschino liqueur, for a truly elevated experience.
Beyond the Basics
Beyond the obvious swaps, bartenders are championing lesser-known cocktails. The Corpse Reviver No. 2, a potent 19th-century concoction of gin, orange liqueur, lemon juice, and Lillet Blanc, is frequently cited as a masterful upgrade. Its balanced complexity is a far cry from simpler options. Joel Puntiel Polanco, Head Bartender at Small Batch, echoes this sentiment, stating, “An Army and Navy is essentially a grown-up lemonade, and it’s so freaking good!” But he also suggests considering Pimm’s Cup, a refreshing blend of Pimm’s No. 1 liqueur, lemonade, and a garnish of cucumber and mint.
Refined Refreshment
This isn’t about dismissing familiar favorites entirely. Rather, it’s about recognizing that our tastes evolve. As we mature, we crave greater depth and sophistication in our drinks. From vibrant classics to carefully constructed blends, there’s a world of flavorful cocktails waiting to be discovered – a world beyond the college bar.
