Great Lakes Brewing Company and Sarris Candies have a long history of collaboration. Last February, the candy company partnered with Penn Brewery in Pittsburgh to create a Peanut Butter Meltaway Chocolate Stout and Double Chocolate Stout. This year’s partnership marks their latest endeavor together – a limited-edition Chocolate Ale that will be available in select stores and on tap at the brewery’s gift store.
The idea for this collaboration came about after Great Lakes’ owners reached out to Sarris Candies’ president and CEO Bill Sarris. “It was a good opportunity to bring the two brands together between the two cities,” said Chelsea Sammel, marketing coordinator for Sarris Candies. The partnership has been in the works since last year’s successful Peanut Butter Meltaway Chocolate Stout.
The limited-edition Chocolate Ale is brewed with 6% ABV and will be sold in six packs at select Giant Eagle stores in Western Pennsylvania and Northeast and Central Ohio. In addition to retail availability, the beer will also be on tap at the Great Lakes brewpub and available for purchase through their gift store.

The Chocolate Ale is a golden-colored beer with a lighter taste profile compared to other chocolate beers. “Nothing quite captures the experience of enjoying a box of Sarris chocolates, but we feel we got pretty close,” said Great Lakes Co-CEO Steven Pauwels.
