## A Decade of Recovery: The Sikh Recovery Network’s Transformative Impact
In Derby, England, a remarkable story of resilience and community support is unfolding. Jaz Rai, a former Rolls-Royce worker, has dedicated the last ten years to building the Sikh Recovery Network (SRN), a UK-wide initiative that’s profoundly impacting the nation’s recovery community. Rai’s journey, starting from a period of intense struggle, offers a powerful testament to the transformative power of shared experience and faith.
## The Beginning of the Journey
In 2006, Jaz Rai was at a critical juncture. He battled a severe dependency on vodka, consuming a bottle daily and experiencing significant physical and mental health consequences. However, this dark period led him to seek solace at the Guru Arjan Dev Gurdwara temple in Stanhope Street, Derby. It was here that he initiated a support group, directly addressing the stigma surrounding addiction within the local Sikh community.
## The Sikh Recovery Network (SRN)
Jaz’s initiative, the Sikh Recovery Network (SRN), rapidly gained traction, expanding beyond Derby into a nationwide operation. The SRN provides a safe and confidential space for individuals struggling with addiction to openly share their experiences and receive guidance from peers who understand their challenges intimately. Rai notes a significant barrier to recovery – the fear of judgment and shame, particularly within culturally sensitive communities. This fear is directly addressed by the SRN’s emphasis on a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
## Breaking Down Barriers
Jaz’s approach to recovery is deeply interwoven with Sikh principles. These include community, selfless service (Seva), and a continuous pursuit of spiritual growth. The SRN’s network of support groups now operates in towns and cities across the UK, including Leicester, Coventry, and Birmingham. Participants share their stories, fostering mutual understanding and offering practical support. The network’s success hinges on a foundation of empathy and shared experience, empowering individuals to confront their addiction head-on.
## A Legacy of Hope & Recognition
Jaz’s story is a powerful reminder that recovery is attainable. His transformation has not only benefited his own life but has inspired countless others to seek help and support. In 2022, he was awarded an OBE by Prince William for his outstanding contribution to the UK’s recovery community – a testament to the tangible impact of his dedication.
## Getting Involved
If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, the Sikh Recovery Network offers a lifeline. Meetings take place every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm at Insomnia Cafe, Littleover. For more information or to get in touch with the SRN, please contact them on 07830 525 756.
Jamie Sain, a significant participant in the SRN, credits Jaz and the network with his own successful recovery. His experience emphasizes the vital role of community support in overcoming addiction – a collaborative journey rather than a solitary one. The SRN continues to grow, driven by Jaz Rai’s unwavering commitment and the strength of the communities it serves.
