Santo Amaro, São Paulo – After years of persistent complaints and mounting environmental scrutiny, the Isover factory in Santo Amaro is set to close its doors in 2026. The decision, finalized through a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and Cetesb (São Paulo State Environmental Company), marks a significant victory for local residents and environmental advocates.
The factory, a major producer of insulation materials, has been the subject of ongoing controversy. For years, neighbors have voiced concerns regarding noxious odors, excessive noise levels, and the release of pollutants into the surrounding area. These issues impacted roughly 50 citizens, particularly children and the elderly, raising serious health concerns.
Cetesb’s involvement stemmed from a prolonged investigation into the factory’s operations. The TAC mandates a phased shutdown, with production scheduled to cease entirely by July 2026. Crucially, the final furnace will be shut down by July 31st of that year, effectively ending Isover’s operations at the Santo Amaro facility.
In recent years, Isover invested in measures aimed at mitigating its environmental impact. These included the implementation of sound insulation and cutting-edge technology designed to reduce water vapor emissions. Furthermore, nighttime unloading was suspended, alleviating a significant source of disruption for local residents.
Isover maintains that its operations have consistently adhered to current environmental legislation and presents no evidence of direct harm to worker health. The company’s representative emphasized a commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.
Councilwoman Renata Falzoni hailed the closure as “a major victory in the fight against climate change and for air quality.” The case highlights the growing pressure on manufacturers to prioritize sustainable practices and the critical role of regulatory bodies in safeguarding public health. The closure is expected to significantly improve air quality in the Santo Amaro region.
