The Keyhaven Yacht Club’s sailing season officially commenced with a spirited Rum Race on January 6, 2026, drawing thirty boats and eager competitors. This annual event, a beloved tradition, marked the start of the season with a healthy dose of competition and, of course, rum.
The race unfolded flawlessly, beginning with a club pontoon as the designated start line and navigating the challenging waters of the Solent before returning for the final check-in.
Divided into Scow and Open Class categories, the day saw impressive displays of skill. In the Scow class, Mark Jardine clinched the victory piloting his Keyhaven Scow. Ashton Dray dominated the Open Class, skillfully navigating his Laser to secure top honors.
Following the race, participants were rewarded with a catered lunch – a generous offering courtesy of Jayne Rother, a dedicated volunteer at the club. A quintessential tradition, each competitor received a tot of rum upon completion, adding a celebratory touch to the day’s achievements.
“It’s fantastic to see such enthusiasm at the beginning of the season,” remarked Club Commodore, David Miller. “The Rum Race is a key element in building camaraderie and launching a successful year of sailing.”
Full race results are available on the Keyhaven Yacht Club website for those eager to review the competition. This promises to be a season of memorable moments for all involved.
