A coordinated police operation in Swindon yesterday culminated in the arrest of three men and the seizure of a substantial haul of illicit tobacco, vapes, and alcohol, sending a clear message to those involved in the illegal trade.
A Targeted Operation Yields Significant Results
Officers from Wiltshire Police, working in partnership with Trading Standards, HMRC, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit, and the National Crime Agency, executed warrants across five businesses and associated residential flats in the Manchester Road area. The operation targeted suspected networks involved in the sale of counterfeit and illegal goods.
The raid uncovered a complex network of concealment, including significant quantities of illicit tobacco and vapes hidden within secret compartments in flats and even inside a running washing machine. A particularly ingenious setup involved a chute running from a flat directly into a business premises, demonstrating the lengths criminals are willing to go to circumvent regulations.
Valued at Hundreds of Thousands
More than fifty boxes of alcohol were seized from one location, which had previously lost its license to sell alcohol. Authorities estimate the total value of the seized goods to be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds, representing a substantial financial loss for illicit traders.
The three men arrested on suspicion of selling counterfeit tobacco are currently in custody, undergoing questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
What This Means for Consumers
The impact of this operation extends beyond the immediate arrests. Consumers can be assured that legitimate retailers are not being undercut by the sale of potentially dangerous and substandard goods. Purchasing from unregulated sources poses significant health risks due to the lack of quality control and potential for harmful additives.

Increased protection for consumers from potentially harmful products. Disrupting organized crime networks that benefit from illicit trade.

Inspector Tippetts’ Statement

The collaboration between Wiltshire Police and our partner agencies is vital in disrupting these networks.”
