January 19th – ‘Blue Monday,’ the purported most depressing day of the year – doesn’t have to be a slog. This year, The Observer is suggesting a proactive approach: a revitalizing twist on the classic Gin Rickey cocktail, dubbed the ‘Blue Monday’ cocktail. The drink is designed to inject a much-needed dose of brightness into a notoriously gray period.
According to Tortoise Media’s analysis of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) factors, a balanced combination of citrus, herbs, and bubbles can offer a genuinely uplifting experience. It’s a clever distillation of principles intended to combat the physiological effects of reduced sunlight.
The ‘Blue Monday’ cocktail isn’t about masking the gloom – it’s about offering a subtle, refreshing counterpoint. And, in a move echoing the growing trend of home bar experimentation, The Observer is encouraging a deliberate investment in enhancing the at-home drinking experience.
The Recipe:
* Cucumber (preferably with the skin removed) for garnish
* Ice cubes
* Lime (about 2-3)
* Grapefruit soda (1 x 150ml can)
* Angostura bitters (1 x 150ml can)
* Gin (optional, 4 dashes)
* Rosemary sprig (for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Peel a length of cucumber and set aside.
2. Fill a tumbler with ice cubes.
3. Roll the lime on a work surface to soften it, then squeeze its juice over the ice.
4. Add grapefruit soda, Angostura bitters, and gin (if using) to the tumbler.
5. Stir the mixture a few times.
6. Garnish with the cucumber strand, curling it around the sides of the glass, and finish with a small sprig of rosemary on top.
Vermouth Appreciation: Aperitivo Time
Alongside the ‘Blue Monday’ cocktail, The Observer is highlighting the strategic importance of stocking up on vermouth. Vermouth, particularly dry vermouth, has emerged as a key ingredient for elevating at-home drinks. Its versatility lends itself to both classic cocktails like the Negroni, and allows for greater experimentation. The rising popularity of aperitivo-style drinks—prepared before a meal—reflects a broader shift towards more thoughtful, ritualistic drinking experiences.
