The rugged beauty of Twine Valley near Ramsbottom is about to lose a treasured piece of its character. The Fisherman’s Retreat, a fixture in the community for 33 years, is announcing its permanent closure on February 1, 2026. This beloved family-run pub, famed for its impressive whisky collection and legendary Bonfire Night celebrations, is calling it a day.
Opened in 1992, The Fisherman’s Retreat quickly became a cornerstone of the local scene. More than just a place to quench your thirst, it was a Sunday dinner institution, a unique wedding venue complete with a fishing lodge, and a vibrant hub for the entire community.
The Magnall family, who poured their hearts and souls into the establishment, made the difficult decision following three decades of service. As they eloquently stated, “It has been an incredible 33 years, but as with all good things, they must eventually come to an end.”
Leading up to the closure, the pub will operate on a reduced schedule. Starting in January, The Fisherman’s Retreat will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only. This provides a final opportunity for loyal patrons to experience the warmth, the exceptional whisky selection, and the convivial atmosphere that defined this Ramsbottom gem.
Speaking about the legacy, the Magnall family expressed profound gratitude to their customers, dedicated staff, cherished friends, and supportive family. Their impact on the community is undeniable. The Fisherman’s Retreat’s story is a testament to the enduring appeal of a truly authentic and welcoming pub. This isn’t just a closing; it’s a farewell to a local legend.
