The meticulous craft of German fruit brandy has once again been recognized, with the University of Hohenheim’s ‘Hohenheimer Kirschwasser’ taking home the prestigious ‘Best Spirit 2025’ title. This accolade follows a critical gold medal victory at the International DLG Quality Test, solidifying the distillery’s reputation for exceptional quality.
At the heart of this success is a commitment to precise distillation. The University’s research distillery employs a cutting-edge, digitized plant, utilizing a sophisticated network of sensors to continuously monitor and adjust the process. This laser focus ensures the delicate aroma profile of the fruit – primarily cherries – is maintained throughout.
Operations Manager Oliver Reber highlighted this approach, stating, “Our digitized system allows us to react in real-time, minimizing thermal stress and maximizing the preservation of the Kirschwasser’s unique character.” The result is a spirit characterized by vibrant notes of cherry, almond, and subtle spice – a testament to the dedication of the university’s team.
Production remains focused on research, with the distillery crafting limited batches for academic study and collaborative projects. Remarkably, these limited runs directly inform approximately 14,000 smaller distilleries across Germany, offering vital recommendations and best practices. While ‘Hohenheimer Kirschwasser’ isn’t generally available for public purchase, its influence on the German spirits industry is undeniable.
This win underscores the University of Hohenheim’s ongoing commitment to innovation and quality within the world of fruit brandy. It’s a proud moment for research and a clear indication that tradition and technology can – and do – beautifully coexist.
