BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – For the second year running, Whiskey Acres Distilling Company is claiming the title of Illinois’ best whiskey. The family-run operation, rooted on the fifth-generation Walter family farm in DeKalb, took home the coveted ‘Best-in-State’ award at the Heartland Whiskey Competition, cementing its place at the forefront of Illinois’ burgeoning spirits scene.
This year’s victory, announced at the Illinois Corn Growers Association’s annual meeting, represents a remarkable achievement for the distillery, which has been meticulously crafting its distinctive spirits for 11 years. The Walter family’s commitment to quality begins with the grains themselves – exclusively corn, soybeans, wheat, and barley – cultivated directly on the farm.
Co-founder and distiller Nick Nagele continues his family’s legacy, drawing on his father’s expertise while managing the distillery’s operations. The farm, spanning approximately 2,000 acres near Sheldon in eastern Illinois, plays a pivotal role, supplying nearly 10% of the distillery’s needs.
The Heartland Whiskey Competition is a significant event, attracting entries from distillers across the U.S. and its territories, all utilizing corn in their spirit production. The judging process is based on an aggregate of ratings, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation.
Beyond the award, Whiskey Acres offers a truly immersive experience. Their visitor center, open on weekends, provides guests with the opportunity to sample their award-winning bourbon, rye whiskey, and other artisan spirits while learning about the farm’s rich history and the Walter family’s dedication to traditional distilling methods. The distillery stands as a proud testament to the power of heritage and locally-sourced ingredients.
A Commitment to Craft
This latest win isn’t just a recognition of the spirits themselves, but of the painstaking process behind them. It’s a story of land, family, and a dedication to producing exceptional whiskey, one grain at a time.
