Scotland’s whisky industry continues to capture the attention of global leaders, recently demonstrated by a private tasting at The Palace of Holyroodhouse. King Charles III recently enjoyed a dram of the award-winning 31 Year Old Rosebank Single Malt Scotch Whisky, marking a significant moment for Ian Macleod Distillers and the revival of this iconic Falkirk distillery.
A Historic Return
The Rosebank Distillery’s story is one of resilience and dedication. Established in 1840, the distillery fell silent in 1993 but was rediscovered and meticulously restored by Ian Macleod Distillers. The reopening on July 18, 2023, represented a remarkable achievement, bringing back a distillery with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries.
The 31 Year Old: A World-Class Whisky
The featured whisky, a 31 Year Old Single Malt, has swiftly garnered international acclaim. Most recently, it was crowned ‘Best Whisky in the World’ at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, cementing its position as a truly exceptional spirit. This prestigious recognition underscores the quality and craftsmanship that has defined Rosebank’s revival.
An Exclusive Encounter
The King’s private tasting was hosted by Leonard Russell, Managing Director & Chairman, and Katy Muggeridge, Brand Director for Rosebank Whisky and sister brand Glengoyne Whisky. ‘We are honoured to have met His Majesty and to have been able to present him with Rosebank Whisky,’ stated Russell. The whisky was distilled before the distillery’s closure and matured in refill casks for over three decades, imbuing it with a depth of character.
The Reception: More Than Just a Dram
The event served as a broader celebration of Scottish business innovation, uniting representatives from the whisky, healthcare, and AI sectors. It highlighted the ongoing dynamism of the Scottish economy and the commitment of Ian Macleod Distillers to preserving and promoting Scotland’s rich distilling heritage.
