Overview: Negroni Week is currently underway in Greater Cleveland from Sept. 21 through 26, providing local cocktail enthusiasts with an opportunity to order the classic gin, sweet vermouth and Campari drink alongside less traditional versions. Two participating venues, Patron Saint and LockKeepers, have released special cocktail menus featuring creative riffs on the Italian aperitivo.
The Full Story
Started by Imbibe magazine in 2013, Negroni Week celebrates the Italian aperitivo cocktail while raising money for Slow Food, a global network that advocates for an accessible, good, clean and fair food system. Participating venues often donate a portion of Negroni Week proceeds to the effort. In Greater Cleveland, Patron Saint, located at 2915 Detroit Ave., and LockKeepers, situated at 8001 Rockside Road in Valley View, are participating with special cocktail menus.
The Valley View restaurant’s Negroni Week menu extends to the kitchen with oysters on the half shell with negroni mignonette, Campari-pressed melon salad and steak tartare with burnt orange aioli. At Patron Saint, guests can order a classic negroni, a negroni sbagliato and three riffs. The Figgy Coffee Boulevardier combines bourbon, Campari, Borghetti and Brucato. The menu also includes a Montenegroni made with Montenegro and the Cheeky Negroni, made with gin, Aperol and Cocchi Americano.
LockKeepers’ drink list includes a limoncello-spiked negroni and the Dolce Negroni, made with Basil Hayden Toast, Campari, sweet vermouth, chocolate liqueur and orange bitters. Other options include a Montenegro negroni and a frozen negroni made with blood orange sorbetto.
Brand & Industry History
The Negroni was invented in Florence, Italy in 1919, when a count wanted a stronger version of an Americano drink. The bartender obliged by swapping soda water for gin in the cocktail, creating the Negroni made with equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth.
What This Means
The event serves to support Slow Food’s advocacy for an accessible, good, clean and fair food system. Participating venues contribute to this cause by donating a portion of Negroni Week proceeds to the effort, ensuring the celebration benefits a global network focused on food integrity.
