Overview: IDW Publishing has established a new presence in the spirits market through a partnership with Official Cellar, signaling a strategic pivot under CEO Davidi Jonas. The collaboration introduces a Toho-approved Godzilla tequila alongside established whiskey releases like Rocketeer and Wynona Earp. This strategic move follows a substantial financial recovery, with cash reserves tripling between 2023 and 2026.
The Full Story
At New York Comic Con, CEO Davidi Jonas announced the partnership with Official Cellar for branded spirits following a significant financial turnaround. When Jonas took over as CEO of IDW Publishing in 2023, the company had about $3.5 million left in cash, and the money was quickly running out. In just three years, Jonas has helped triple that number to over $9 million, with the company celebrating its most profitable cash flow year in about a decade. Upon stabilizing IDW’s financial affairs, Jonas’s second goal was to find new revenue streams through compact additions and an increased number of licenses.
The new ‘Godzilla’ tequila is Toho-approved and launches coinciding with the release of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero. Previous successful spirits include Rocketeer whiskey and Wynona Earp whiskey. An upcoming James Bond collaboration was announced at New York Comic Con involving writer Grant Morrison. IDW Publishing CEO Davidi Jonas stated, “You can see some of those in our compact additions, as well as an increased number of licenses.” His third and final aim was to achieve value in the long run with projects beyond the page like the IDW Games banner.
Brand & Industry History
Following the success of Rocketeer and Wynona Earp-themed whiskey products, IDW and Official Cellar have once again joined forces on a Toho-approved Godzilla tequila. Before Jonas joined IDW, there was a sense that the company was losing major licenses like Transformers and G.I. Joe. The opposite is now happening, where licensers that are serious about comics and graphic novels are consistently choosing IDW as their publishing partner. Under Jonas’s leadership, IDW recently gained an entire percentage point in the overall comic book market share. It is the result of a lot of deliberate work across editorial, sales, and marketing to make biggest franchises feel bigger, while giving original stories room to break through.
What This Means
These IP-based partnerships are lucrative, certainly, but they can and do expire. As such, it is always smart to have in-house properties to fall back on. IDW is also collaborating with renowned CNN journalist Jake Tapper on a graphic detailing on the hunt for Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie. Slated to go on sale June 1, 2027, The Butcher: The Decades-Long Hunt for Klaus Barbie is both written and illustrated by Tapper. Jonas concluded, “I feel like we took a failing publishing business, and turned it into a diversified business with profitable publishing at its core, and many growth areas extending from and beyond publishing.”
Consumer Takeaway
The ‘Godzilla’ tequila marks a kaiju-sized notch in the business’s belt, particularly as the launch coincides with the release of Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero. While it won’t give you atomic breath, the agave spirit inspired by Japan’s most famous monster marks a significant addition to the portfolio. We hope the bottles, artwork, dedication, and respect for the fans, the King of the Monsters, and the franchise as a whole comes through. Hopefully, it is something fans will love to enjoy and display and share with friends.
