Overview: Berry Bros. & Rudd has selected a nine-year-old English single malt from Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery for its 2026 Odyssey collection. The release, titled “The Auld and the Bold,” represents a second independent bottling by the London merchant for the North Yorkshire producer. Felix Dear described the bottling as a milestone for the distillery and for English whisky more broadly.
The Full Story
Felix Dear, Spirits Curator at Berry Bros. & Rudd, hand-selected Cask #2231 straight from the warehouse. The cask is an ex-Moscatel Sherry cask dating back to 2017. Together, the team scoured the warehouse to find this exceptional nine-year-old vessel with notes of peach honey, ginger and a light dusting of chocolate.
Joe Clark, whisky director at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery based in Hunmanby, noted that this release marks the second independent bottling of their whisky from Berry Bros. & Rudd. The collection celebrates the evolving world of whisky, honouring both Scottish heritage and innovative distillers worldwide.
Production & Profile
This whisky spent much of its life in an ex-Moscatel cask, which brings a bright, fragrant character to the fruit-forward house style Spirit of Yorkshire does so well. The bottle contains 70cl of spirit bottled at 57.1 per cent ABV.
The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery produces Filey Bay single malt whisky using 100 per cent homegrown barley, making it one of the few true field-to-bottle distilleries in the UK.
Brand & Industry History
Berry Bros. & Rudd, established in 1698, is still based at No.3 St James’s Street in London. Felix Dear described the bottling as a milestone for the distillery and for English whisky more broadly. He noted that not so long ago, a nine-year-old English single malt felt like a distant prospect.
What This Means
At nine years old, the release marks a real milestone, not just for the distillery, but for English whisky as a whole. To work with Britain’s oldest wine and spirits merchant for a second momentous release is nothing short of an honour and a privilege.
Consumer Takeaway
