DeKalb, IL – For the second year in a row, Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. is the reigning champion of Illinois whiskey, having secured the coveted ‘Best-in-State’ title at the annual Heartland Whiskey Competition. The announcement, made at the Illinois Corn Growers Association’s meeting, underscores the distillery’s commitment to farm-to-bottle production and locally sourced ingredients.
Founded by the Walter family, Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. has been crafting exceptional spirits from its 2,000-acre DeKalb farm for eleven years. The distillery’s operation utilizes approximately 10% of the farm’s yield – primarily corn and soybeans – alongside additions of wheat and barley, all carefully selected for their quality and contribution to the final spirit. This dedication to ‘farming first’ is a cornerstone of their philosophy, emphasizing the importance of a truly local product.
‘We are incredibly proud to once again earn this recognition,’ stated Nick Nagele, co-founder and distiller at Whiskey Acres. ‘It’s a testament to the hard work of our team and the exceptional quality of our ingredients.’
The Heartland Whiskey Competition, sponsored by IL Corn and corn grower organizations from twelve other states, provides a rigorous platform for distilleries nationwide to compete. Industry professionals judge the entries, recognizing those that best exemplify quality and craftsmanship.
Beyond the award-winning whiskey, Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. offers a vibrant visitor center, open weekends, welcoming approximately 30,000 guests annually to explore the farm and sample their spirits. The distillery’s success isn’t just about the product; it’s about a deeply rooted connection to the land and the tradition of Illinois agriculture.
This latest achievement solidifies Whiskey Acres’ position as a leading artisan distiller, demonstrating the power of local ingredients and a dedication to quality that resonates throughout the industry.
