Boteagas Juan Gil, based in Jumilla, Spain, has taken an innovative approach to producing its first ever brandy. The spirit is crafted from 100% Monastrell grapes, a grape variety more commonly used in the GSM blends of the Southern Rhône.
Monastrell also known as Mourvèdre is used alongside Grenache and Syrah in many iconic wines such as Château Rayas, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Chapoutier’s Les Bécasses. The Gil family has said that their release realises their ‘long-held ambition to produce a premium brandy that aligns with fine Cognac’.
The grape must is distilled using traditional Charentais copper alembics – similar to those used in the Cognac region – and aged in American oak barrels. After an initial 12 months in oak, the brandy is filled into a French oak solera system for six months of dynamic ageing.
This unique process allows for a gradual integration of aromatic and structural components, ensuring that the final product is a harmonious mix of many years, giving it further complexity as well as consistency year on year. The result is described by tasting notes as red fruits, vanilla and spices with an overall sense of elegance and balance.

The brandy has been produced without artificial sweeteners or colouring. It will be available in the UK at a retail price of £50 (US$67) for 700ml. Juan Gil plans to follow this release with a Gran Reserva brandy, which is expected to debut later this year.
