Portland, Oregon is leading the charge this Dry January, with over a dozen bars reimagining the non-alcoholic experience. What was once a limited offering is now a vibrant landscape of creative and complex mocktails, proving that a January sans spirits doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. From established institutions to newly opened venues, bartenders are pushing the boundaries of flavor and presentation.
A City of Flavorful Alternatives
Several long-standing Portland favorites are stepping up their game. Clark Lewis, a fixture for over two decades, continues to impress with its Hibiscus Harvest ($8-$15) – a delicate blend of hibiscus syrup, cranberry, lemon, soda, and mint. Hi-Top is another key player, offering a mix of alcohol-free drinks including lemonade, a shrub, and NA beer ($5 – $10), alongside a standout cactus flower mocktail featuring Ritual NA Tequila, grapefruit, lime, agave, and lemon-lime soda.
Newcomers and Refreshed Classics
Newer venues are also contributing significantly to the trend. LaVerne’s, opened just last September 2025, has already made waves with its Parch NA Margarita ($3-$11). The Lutz Tavern, a Portland institution since 1947, is offering NA cocktails at $6 each. Malpractice is a standout, particularly for its ‘Cosmic Wilderness’ (persimmon, rosemary syrup, orange juice, beet juice) ($8 – $12), while North 45 tempts with its Churro Italian Soda ($5 – $8).
Beyond the Basics
Many bars have completely revamped their mocktail menus. Paydirt Bar offers a complete refresh ($12 – $14), and Sad Valley Bar boasts the ‘Toni Coldette’ (frozen slushie, blood orange, yuzu, ginger, fresh lemon, lime) ($8 – $12) as a must-try. Takibi has reintroduced a previous year’s mocktail and added three new ones based on Ghia sodas ($12 each), and The Uncanny Bar’s ‘Spirit-Free’ drinks range from $9 to $13, including the ‘Paradise Forgotten’ – DHOS NA gin & bitter, Tom Yum super foam, pineapple, and lime. Xiao Ye is also offering creative concoctions such as the Root of the Problem and their Pandan Coconut Sparkler.
This Dry January in Portland is more than just a trend; it’s a celebration of innovation and deliciousness. With such a diverse selection of options, even the most ardent spirit drinker will find something to enjoy.
