Overview: Point Blank Tequila, a Fort Worth-based brand founded by Andrew Summersett, has secured top honors at the 2026 Agavos Awards International Spirits Competition. The distillery offers Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo expressions distributed through Total Wine stores across Texas and select liquor stores.
The Full Story
Entrepreneur Andrew Summersett launched Point Blank last year with a focus on labor-intensive production and authentic heritage. While Summersett previously worked in real estate development, he noted that tequila requires significant international work to execute correctly. The brand has already gained recognition within the industry, earning top honors at the 2026 Agavos Awards International Spirits Competition.
Judges awarded Point Blank’s Blanco expression a double gold medal, with the Reposado and Añejo each winning gold in their respective categories. In addition to the taste competition, Point Blank took home gold in the bottle design category for its creative, unusual appearance as well as gold in the marketing category for its overall branding strategy.
The brand’s iconic donkey on the label is not just a marketing gimmick. His name is Nacho, and he lives at Point Blank’s distillery, where he roams the grounds “like he built the place,” Summersett said. When Summersett was starting Point Blank’s distillery — Destiladora Agave Azul —he saw a brown donkey staring at him like the burro was the boss.
Production & Profile
The products are eco-friendly, with the bottle molded from 100% recycled glass, labels made from sustainable agave fiber and closures crafted from recycled metal. The brand emphasizes a philosophy of no additives, no sugars, no dyes, and no B.S., ensuring the spirit remains clean.
Production takes place in a small town called San Juanito, which is outside of Guadalajara in Jalisco. The team includes Don José García, the patriarch of the distillery and farming operations, and Zandra Gómez Santiago, who serves as master distiller. Summersett highlighted that Zandra is a pioneer in her space as a female master distiller busting through barriers for women.
Brand & Industry History
Tequila has been a part of Summersett’s business journey for the last four years, evolving from a whim into a thoughtful process that took years to perfect. The brand aims to portray and honor the work and heritage from this part of the world, telling the story that deserves to be told. This includes bringing individuals like Don José García and Zandra Gómez Santiago to the forefront through social media and website content.
What This Means
Sales of spirits have been increasing while other categories like beer and wine have been flat or down, according to Summersett. He attributes this shift to a more health-conscious society where people are paying attention to what goes into their body and what’s behind the label. Tequila is presented as an example of how to drink cleanly, arguably one of the better ways to do it given current market trends.
