The Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery sits at the foot of Mount Emei, one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. Established by Pernod Ricard, it is the first fully operational malt whisky distillery in China established by an international spirits and wine group. The setting immediately establishes the mood, with architecture designed by Shanghai-based practice Neri&Hu to echo the surrounding landscape. Three long buildings, roofed with reclaimed clay tiles and supported by a modern concrete post-and-beam structure, reinterpret traditional Chinese architecture. Contemporary artist Zhan Wang’s Fractal Structure – Infinite Shan Shui sculptures set a contemplative tone before visitors step inside.
The distillery is part of a broader culture of craftsmanship found in whisky-making, Sichuan cuisine, traditional lacquerware and panda conservation. Across Chengdu and its surrounds, this culture runs through the region from what people eat and drink to the traditions they are working to preserve. Its signature comes from proprietary Chinese Single Oak casks, made with limited quantities of timber sourced from the protected Changbai Mountain region in northeastern China. The wood imparts notes of sandalwood and mandarin peel before the whiskies are brought together in the final expression.
The production process follows malting, mashing, fermentation, double distillation and maturation. Water is sourced from Mount Emei. An immersive installation traces the water flowing from Mount Emei to the distillery.
