Overview: Melanie Walker has secured the title of Bartender of the Year at the 2026 NZ Spirits Awards, marking a historic moment as the first woman to receive the honor. The achievement comes from The Distillery in Whanganui District, which opened just four months prior to the August 2026 announcement.
The Full Story
Walker relocated from the United States to Marton in January 2025 following a meeting at the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in Colorado. A trained biochemist with a goal to obtain a PhD, she previously worked for eight years at Hapa Sushi in Denver under her sister Kayla, who served as her first bartending teacher.
The establishment represents a collaboration between Papaiti Gin and Good Bones Vodka on Drews Ave. Founders Adrian Rumney, Nikki Oesterle, and Vaughan Campbell onboarded Walker immediately after opening the bar. She participated in Dockside Social event series on the banks of the Whanganui River last summer. The Distillery now has eight employees and remains increasingly busy.
Consumer Takeaway
Visitors to Drews Ave can experience the work of a manager with 12 years of experience who balances science and hospitality. The venue offers an opportunity to meet people and carry on conversations, reflecting Walker’s philosophy that women can accomplish anything men can in the industry.
