The Full Story
Virginia Distillery Co. is proud to announce two new additions to The Brewer’s Coalition, a limited-edition series of American Single Malt whiskies finished in casks from renowned breweries across the country. The Revolution Brewing Straight Jacket Barleywine Ale Cask Finish American Single Malt and The Bruery Black Tuesday Stout Cask Finish American Single Malt each draw on the character of a cult-favorite beer, finishing award-winning American Single Malt whisky in barrels that previously held two of the most sought-after beer releases in American craft brewing. Releasing two expressions at once lets people taste just how much the barrel shapes the whisky—the same single malt, aged over five years in ex-bourbon, taken in two completely different directions.
Gareth Moore, CEO of Virginia Distillery Co., noted that Revolution Brewing and The Bruery are two of the most respected names in brewing. Straight Jacket and Black Tuesday are legendary beers, and getting to finish the whisky in these barrels continues the mission to innovate within the American Single Malt category. For this collaboration, Revolution sent six freshly dumped Straight Jacket barrels to Virginia Distillery Co., where they were filled with American Single Malt whisky for finishing. The partnership will continue in 2027, with Virginia Distillery Co. sending American Single Malt barrels to Revolution Brewing for a special Twenty Ten Collection variant featuring Straight Jacket and supplemental French oak.
Production & Profile
The Bruery Black Tuesday Stout Cask Finish takes its cues from the bold character of The Bruery’s Black Tuesday, the bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout that has become one of the most coveted beers in the country. The whisky is made from 100% malted barley, aged in premium ex-bourbon barrels for over five years, and then finished in Black Tuesday imperial stout barrels. Aromas of blackberry jam and caramel lead into soft citrus, chocolate, and hints of anise on the palate, with a velvety, complex, and enduring finish.
The Revolution Brewing Straight Jacket Barleywine Ale Cask Finish is inspired by the robust character of Revolution Brewing’s Straight Jacket, a barrel-aged barleywine from the Chicago brewery’s acclaimed Deep Wood Series. This release begins with American Single Malt whisky aged for more than five years in premium ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in barrels that previously held Straight Jacket. Aromas of oat scones and apricot lead into notes of maple syrup and fresh-cut ginger on the palate, with a finish that is rich, warming, and delicately spiced. Both releases are bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
Brand & Industry History
Virginia Distillery Company partners with top breweries nationwide, sourcing exceptional beer barrels to bring unique depth and character to its world-class American Single Malt whisky. Founded on the vision of George G. Moore, the distillery is operated by his wife, Angela, and son, Gareth, who continue to elevate American whisky with an emphasis on quality and innovation. Based in Lovingston, VA, the distillery produces Courage & Conviction, its flagship American Single Malt whisky, and the Virginia Distillery Company American Single Malt range, featuring unique cask finishes from both Old and New World traditions.
What This Means
The collaboration highlights a mutual exchange of barrel expertise between two respected brewing entities. Barry Holmes, CEO of The Bruery, stated that Black Tuesday has always been a beer that lets the barrel speak, creating a decadent stout that can pull tremendous depth and character from the barrels in which it is aged. To be able to release their Brewers Coalition whiskey finished in Black Tuesday barrels alongside Black Tuesday aged in their American Single Malt barrels is something truly special. Marty Scott, Barrel Program Manager at Revolution Brewing, noted that they have filled and emptied over ten thousand bourbon barrels since their production brewery began operations in 2012.
Consumer Takeaway
Just six barrels of each expression will be released in September, with limited quantities available online, at select retailers, and at the Virginia Distillery Co. Visitors Center. These releases offer a unique opportunity to taste American Single Malt whisky shaped by two of the most sought-after beer releases in American craft brewing. The partnership continues in 2027, ensuring ongoing innovation within the category for future enthusiasts.
